Live Chat: Talk Notre Dame football with Eric Hansen(11/17/2011)
12:00
Eric Hansen:
Welcome to the pre-BC version of Notre Dame football live chat. No special helmets or green jerseys are required. What I do ask is that you include your city and name with your question. No 17-part questions. No manifestos. No excessive whining. No swearing. And, please, no wagering. With that, we're ready to roll.

Will this be Teo's last home game game?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:00 David in Columbus
12:01
Eric Hansen:
David, I've gone back and forth on this one, but I'm going to say it will NOT be his last home game. I think 80 percent he will be back.

[Comment From Rick (Goshen)Rick (Goshen): ]
Eric, I feel so far there hasnt been a bigger disappointment on the team then Theo Riddick. He seems to go through entire GAMES without doing much. Robby Toma stepped in last week and was very productive, and had as many catches (7 I think) that Theo seems to get in 2-3 games! One game does not a trend make, but if we see another productive game from Toma this week, could he surpass Theo as the starter, and do you feel he should? Thanks.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:03 Rick (Goshen)
12:05
Eric Hansen:
Hi Rick, it's been such an enigmatic season for Theo, but I never give up on 18- to 22-year-olds. There's so many examples of guys who eventually figure it out. Theo is a hard worker, conscientious and talented. I think he'll turn it around at some point. Having said that, Toma needs to play at this point. And he will start again Saturday. Theo is healthy enough to play a reserve role after missing the last game with a hamstring injury. But again, Toma deserves his shot.

[Comment From Katy in South BendKaty in South Bend: ]
Eric, Dayne Crist has meant a lot to this team, despite being benched this season. He helped keep his recruiting class together in 2008, he’s put tons of energy into serving the community since he’s been here, modeled what it looks like to fight through serious injury, been a positive influence on Mike Floyd, helped mentor and coach the younger QBs, and continued to be a well-loved leader in the locker room and among fans. He will graduate and may leave campus for good in just a few weeks, now. Do you think Coach Kelly appreciates what Dayne’s meant to this team and to the Notre Dame community?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:05 Katy in South Bend
12:07
Eric Hansen:
I can't speak for Brian Kelly, but I know I appreciate the kind of man Dayne Crist is. I've been doing this since I had jet black hair and no grandkids or kids, and he is in the top five of people I've covered/interviewed in terms of impressing me as a human being. He deserves a happy ending .. somewhere.

[Comment From Jay from the PenninsulaJay from the Penninsula: ]
Hi Eric- thank you for all of your great work. I always worry about Boston College- for them, this game is everything. Do you have a score prediction? I think we have to run to win- run a lot.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:08 Jay from the Penninsula
12:10
Eric Hansen:
Jay, thanks. With good reason you worry, because past seemingly overmatched BC teams have risen up on a regular basis. I do think ND gets it done. I just don't think this Eagles team has enough offensive firepower. If ND doesn't commit 5 or 6 turnovers, I predict they will win 28-10. BC's defense has found some traction recently. I think ND will be able to run the ball on these guys.

Is it true that Golson is struggling in the class room?

Do you think there will a QB competition in the spring our will Rees be named the starter?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:11 David in Columbus

I think there will be an open competition, but it will be Tommy's job to lose.

[Comment From GB from Wasilla, AlaskaGB from Wasilla, Alaska: ]
Eric, I've asked you before about the punt return game. The opposition always seems to be on top of the return man before he can run. ND does not seem to block. You mentioned something about ND has a hard time with the PR game running from the spread. If that is the case, why don't they change formations? Why do they need to use a spread formation on PRs anyway since 95% of the time it will actually be a punt and they can run fake punts from other formations.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:18 GB from Wasilla, Alaska
12:20
Eric Hansen:
GB, I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. ND has trouble dealing with the spread punt formation from their OPPONENTS. It's become popular -- and basically you have seven gunners instead of 2. Punt return averages and the number of punt returns, as I wrote today, are way down nationally. Now ND is at the very bottom. It's something they will need to address between the end of the regular season and the bowl game and again in the offseason. For now, they just hope Michael Floyd can get some space and make some people miss.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:20 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Robert CaliforniaRobert California: ]
Do you have an early favorite for the 2013 class at QB?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:22 Robert California

I haven't thought that far ahead yet. My head is still spinning over 2012.

[Comment From Roger, DallasRoger, Dallas: ]
History tells us to expect a jump in year three, and it seems Kelly and the team are trending towards that. A look at next year's schedule, though, seems to prevent such a bump. How do you see next year's slate unfolding?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:23 Roger, Dallas
12:25
Eric Hansen:
Schedules can be deceiving. The 2010 one looked fairly easy and ended up being No. 1 toughest in the NCAA scheduling format. This one looked like there weren't a lot of weak teams, and actually there have been quite a few. I think improved quarterback play, finding someone to replace Michael Floyd's production and getting the back end of the defense settled will have the most to say about whether there is a bump in 2012.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:25 Eric Hansen
12:26
[Comment From Joe from SBJoe from SB: ]
What to you think of the Bob Davie hire by New Mexico? What were his biggest shortcomings at ND in your opinion? You don't seem to be a big fan of him from previous comments.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:26 Joe from SB
12:27
Eric Hansen:
I think the Bob Davie hiring at New Mexico is stunning, fascinating and weird all rolled into one. He was surrounded by really good assistants here and was really, I think, overmatched. I do wish him well. Perhaps the time away from the game as a coach has given him a chance to learn from his mistakes at ND.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:27 Eric Hansen
12:27
[Comment From MIke Mike NoVAMIke Mike NoVA: ]
Hello sir, has the freshman wide out Daniels played this year on ST or are they saving his eligibility?? very worried about having a big, tall wide out next year to replace Floyd. Also I am ready for some more commitments!!! I saw the one Marshall RB commited yesterday, can we get the other one. Any news???
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:27 MIke Mike NoVA
12:30
Eric Hansen:
DaVaris has not used his eligibility this season, so he will retain a fifth-year option down the road. Robert Woods at USC and Givens at Wake show you can win without a tall receiver. I do think if ND could get a commitment from Nelson Agholor, he fits the Floyd profile and would be ready to contribute next season. Keith Marshall, the other Marshall, announced his top 6 yesterday and ND is in it. I still think the Irish are well-positioned to land another top running back.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:30 Eric Hansen
12:30
[Comment From Matt, Colo SpringsMatt, Colo Springs: ]
Eric – I’m sure you’ve addressed this already in terms of recruiting, but who or what positions do see BK addressing to complete recruiting? It looks like it Kiel or bust at QB, 1 more running back (Keith Marshall or Russell), 1 more receiver (Algholor, Darboh, DGB is a long shot) 1 or 2 more o-lineman (Peat, Garnett, Banner) 1 more safety (Thompson, Schumate…), 1 d-lineman (Armstead) and 1 OLB Spence, Odenigbo) and another top tier CB (Howard, Wright, Adams, and others). That is 8-9 spots. Is there room for 8-9 additions?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:30 Matt, Colo Springs
12:33
Eric Hansen:
Matt, every commit eats into the 5th-year class, so you're going to have to make some tough choices at the end. I think they can add 6-7 without much trauma. Getting to 8-9 is going to be interesting without someone transferring -- which could happen. As far as needs and numbers? Man you're good. Want to do the chat for me next week?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:33 Eric Hansen
12:33
[Comment From Mark, Orange County, CAMark, Orange County, CA: ]
Hi Eric, a 52 yard field goal was a great sight to see last week. Who will be kicking the field goals next season?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:33 Mark, Orange County, CA
12:33
Eric Hansen:
Mark, my assumption is it will be Kyle Brindza, though Nick Tausch will get a shot as well.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:33 Eric Hansen
12:34
[Comment From Roger, DallasRoger, Dallas: ]
Let's say the Irish crush BC and then handle Stanford (a tall order). Did the Cardinal's loss to Oregon eliminate the Irish from BCS contention?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:34 Roger, Dallas
12:35
Eric Hansen:
I think ND's loss to USC all but eliminated the Irish from BCS contention. Stanford losing to Oregon didn't help. They've just got so far to climb, it looks so improbable. If BC were ranked and ND beat them, then maybe there is momentum. I just don't see it.

2 quick ones. Who is under center for the 1st snap against Navy in Ireland next year? Who is a player who's name we'll know well next year that hasn't played this year (or that's played very little)?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:36 Walt St Louis, MO
12:37
Eric Hansen:
This is clearly a crystal ball question, and I'm due for my 100,000-mile checkup on it, but I will say Andrew Hendrix and Ishaq Williams.

[Comment From Mike in South BendMike in South Bend: ]
Hi Eric..thanks for the opportunity to chat. Wanted to get a sense of how Kelly is in his pressers (not including the "our guys" post-practice presser). It seems as though Kelly is more relaxed in the post-practice pressers. Do you get the sense that you're getting more "honest" answers at the post-practice pressers? He always seems so anxious to go on Tuesdays...
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:38 Mike in South Bend
12:39
Eric Hansen:
I think both Charlie and BK enjoy the post-practice ones more. They're shorter, there aren't as many eyeballs on them, there's a smaller group of media that Kelly knows better. Many times, I find I'll save a question and ask it on Wed or Thurs, for that very reason.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:39 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Jim from KennywoodJim from Kennywood: ]
I wonder why Crist didn't see the field last week. If the game is secured why not put the guy in?He deserves much more than what he's getting.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:39 Jim from Kennywood
12:40
Eric Hansen:
I thought we would/should have seen at least one backup in the game for an entire series. I was surprised.

[Comment From Doug from Brunswick, GaDoug from Brunswick, Ga: ]
Eric, the Irish are on a roll but if they stub their toe against BC (heaven forbid), the ney sayers will start screaming again. You're in a position to know. Do the players and coaches understand that a vast majority of us IRISH fans are loyal and understand the growing pains that they are going through? Disappointed at a loss, to be sure, but always loyal. If you get a chance, please let the guys know this. Thanks.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:40 Doug from Brunswick, Ga

You are on record, but I'm not sure if you have a lot of company, judging from my emails.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:41 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Andrew B, Washington DCAndrew B, Washington DC: ]
Do you agree that the punt return problems stem mostly from poor coverage vs. poor returners. Even though ND doesn't pressure punts, the return men rarely have room to maneuver. If our returners will have no room anyway, why don't we pressure EVERY punt? Do you know what specific things Kelly has done, if any, to try to remedy the problem? It doesn't appear he has made any adjustments...and that's toubling.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:41 Andrew B, Washington DC
12:44
Eric Hansen:
Andrew, when you're dead last in punt returns all season, you do open yourself up for criticism. Having said that, you have 20 hours to spend with these guys a week, so you have to prioritize. Because of that, sometimes you can't completely fix something during the season. You have to use duct tape. That's where ND is with this. They are at least catching the ball (not fumbling, not letting it roll). That's a start. The hope is M. Floyd can break some tackles and pop one here in the next couple of weeks. The real fixing will come after the regular season at the earliest.

[Comment From Paul, Galway, IrelandPaul, Galway, Ireland: ]
Great reporting as always Eric - look forward to these live chats every week. Can you give us an insight of what the team spirit is like now?? Do you think Manti and the other senior player will really deep down forgive Coach Kelly for that post USC game, pre Navy game, bust up?? Someone like Manti comes across as a very deep person and I wouldn't like to cross him!! I don't think he will forget it (really hope Manti is in Dublin for Sept 2012!)
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:44 Paul, Galway, Ireland
12:46
Eric Hansen:
Hey Paul, great question. I would say the hard feelings may not be gone, but they don't seem to be on the front burner anymore. I had a chance to chat with Manti a bit last night, and I think he's in a good place. As time goes by and wins accumulate, this team will distance itself from that incident.

[Comment From James, DallasJames, Dallas: ]
Who are the obvious and almost obvious 5th year rerturnees? Who will Kelly have to think about as a tradeoff to a final three star recruit?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:47 James, Dallas
12:49
Eric Hansen:
James, I think the only absolutes are Cave, Slaughter and Kap Lewis-Moore. I think Mike Golic would be a good one, because of his position flexibility and his leadership. I'd want him on my team. I think the rest of the fifth years are going to have to see how recruiting is going. ND is mostly involved with 4- and 5-stars as this point, so I don't think they would bump someone for a f3-star.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:49 Eric Hansen
12:50
[Comment From Detroit DaveDetroit Dave: ]
Borderline Manifesto here. How's about college football forming four superconferences of 16 teams each. Each conference has four 4 team subdivisions. Each year each subdivision teams up with another subdivision so that everyone plays the same teams and every three years everyone in the conference plays everyone else. Also this makes for just 7 required conference games each year allowing scheduling flexibility (helpful to ND). The two divisions play off for conference champ leaving four teams to do the playoff.
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:50 Detroit Dave
12:50
Eric Hansen:
Dave, you may get your wish. I just wish we could go back to the way it was a few years ago. I liked the geographical nature of conferences and the rivalries.

Eric, can you give us a summary recap of 2012 recruiting math, and name the top five 4/5 star realistic targets? Kieth Marshall, Noah Spence, Algohor ...and?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:54 James, Dallas
12:55
Eric Hansen:
James, this goes to your question and an earlier one ... I did not have the numbers in front of me. I do now. If ND keeps three fifth-years, it can take up to nine more recruits (with Perkins now gone). If they keep four, then it's 8. ,,,, and so on and so on.

[Comment From Tom from Cedar Rapids, IATom from Cedar Rapids, IA: ]
I guess there's probably somewhere to look this up, but Tommy Rees seems to be having a very good year (if you don't count fumbles) and his passing stats have got to be up there . . . compared to Claussen? Nationally? Where does he stand?
Thursday November 17, 2011 12:56 Tom from Cedar Rapids, IA
1:00
Eric Hansen:
Rees' strong showing against Maryland bumped him up to 38th, the highest he's been this season in the national passing efficiency rankings. Clausen finished his sophomore year 43rd, but he jumped to 3rd as a junior.

Is ND ducking playing teams from the SEC conference? I cannot believe they cannot get a team on the schedule.. ND thinks they are a national team playing a national schedule but until they play teams from the SEC they are not going to be taken seriously..
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:02 jay
1:02
Eric Hansen:
Jay, I know Brian Kelly would like to play an SEC team. Jack Swarbrick prefers for that to happen in a bowl game -- or perhaps an off-site home game setting. I liked the series with Tennessee. Although the Vols are down now, I thought it was a good one.

[Comment From Jake, Albany, NYJake, Albany, NY: ]
Eric, love the chats. Two things: First, should we start buying tickets to Disney World for December? Or is there another possible option for the Irish in the bowl scenario? I know BCS is a pipedream at this point. Secondly, what are your thoughts on the Shamrock Series games? Any ideas on where it might shift after 2013 in Dallas?
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:03 Jake, Albany, NY
1:05
Eric Hansen:
Jake, I would not want to tell anyone to buy something that is non-refundable, but I think a BC win would make the Champs Sports Bowl all but a certainty. I loved the San Antonio game (because the city is amazing and the people too), and the Yankee Stadium game, but this one felt kind of sterile. I would like to see it maybe every 3-4 years than annual. I think six games away from ND Stadium is too much every year. My guess beyond 2013 is a game somewhere in Florida -- maybe Orlando.

[Comment From robb austin, delaplane, vrobb austin, delaplane, v: ]
Thaks Eric ... To me everything Kelly does and says tells me he 'gets it' ... it's about winning cleanly .... i.e. his challenge to the players he did not recruit ... but that said ... red shirting Goshen also tells me that's who he believes is his future QB ... he didn't want to burn a year for the QB he really likes. Thoughts?

Eric Hansen:
I'm not sure I can read between your lines, but I think you are saying Golson is the next ND QB? I think BK has some really good options, even more so if Kiel comes aboard. The spring competition will be riveting.

[Comment From Mike from ValparaisoMike from Valparaiso: ]
Don't mean to jump ahead, but if we win out and finish 9-3, is it still the Champs Sports Bowl or do we have a shot at a BCS bowl, or even another bowl not yet on the radar? Great work by the way, enjoy your coverage.
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:07 Mike from Valparaiso
1:09
Eric Hansen:
Thanks Mike, ND has to get into the top 14 to be considered. Right now they aren's even in the top 25 of the BCS. That's a long way to climb. There aren't any other bowls in play but the BCS level and the Champs. The only way another bowl gets involved is if ND goes 7-5 and the Champs cools on them. Then the Irish must go dumpster-diving so to speak.

[Comment From Steve - Canton MISteve - Canton MI: ]
I noticed in one of the games from the past weekend as a team was kicking a last second field goal to possibly win the game that the student section threw numerous snowballs attempting to deflect the ball. The kick went wide and was not affected by the snowballs, but it created a question as to is there such a rule in college football as to fan interference on the flight of the football? Could get interesting during late season games.

[Comment From Dan from Ballwin, MODan from Ballwin, MO: ]
What has happened to Prince Shembo this year? I really thought he was on track to be a star and while still only a Soph he has not had the impact I expected him to have thus far.
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:14 Dan from Ballwin, MO
1:19
Eric Hansen:
A few factors have come into play ... not the least of which was a serious medical condition suffered by his father. That knocked him out of one game and limited him in one other. Some of it is the offenses ND has gone against. With Maryland, BK wanted to get another DB on the field, so Slaughter started and ND played nickel most of the game. I think all in all, he's been pretty solid.
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:19 Eric Hansen

[Comment From EdEd: ]
Why put a backup in the game when the starter is far from a finished product and is probably starting next year as well? Kelly worked on a lot of different aspects with Rees last week when the game was in hand like tempo and the deep ball.
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:19 Ed
1:21
Eric Hansen:
Ed, I would argue, you are risking injury to that starter in a 38-7 game in which he had already been sacked three times. Also, against Maryland defense missing more than half its starters due to injury and already rotating in more reserves at that point, are you really developing Rees more than you could do in a practice setting against your own No. 1 or 2 defense? Not buying it.
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:21 Eric Hansen
1:21
[Comment From Al from PhillyAl from Philly: ]
Eric, Glad to hear what you had to say about Crist. I suspect Kelly expected him to come in playing like an All-American and when he didn't went 180 degrees in the opposite direction. If Kelly had worked as hard developing Crist as he has Rees I think we would be looking at a BCS bowl this year or next. What do you think the odds are Rees is the starting QB in 1012 and 2013?
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:21 Al from Philly
1:23
Eric Hansen:
Al, thanks. where this is all going from a QB standpoint is a tough read. Golson and Hendrix have the prototypical skill sets for this offense. But for Kelly, mastering the offense mentally trumps all. If Hendrix or Golson get to that point, then things get really interesting, because of the extra dimensions they bring. Rees must continue to improve.

Eric, I've been impressed with Austin Collinsworth on the special teams squads since his freshman season. Is there a chance we'll see him used on the offensive or defensive side of the ball his junior and senior seasons?

Frank, real impressive kid. He'll play a lot at safety next year, with Harrison Smith gone. Zeke Motta and Slaughter leave after 2012, so he may start in 2013.

Not at 38th nationally in passing efficiency. With his skill set (no running), He needs to be in the top 10. So this offseason is a big one for him.

Why do ND fans not realize that punt returns are down all over the country because of the changes in rules. Also, there is no correlation between good punt returns and winning. Look at the teams that have the best returns in the country. Most are not very good.

[Comment From Kevin - West LafayetteKevin - West Lafayette: ]
Eric, A couple of questions. 1) there seems to be a dearth of interceptions by our defense this year. Is this a scheme issue, or something else? 2) What is going on with Kyle Brindza. Dude was brought in to kick the ball out of the stadium (which he did fairly well early), but now routinely is only hit the 10- or 15-yard line? Tired leg? Seems like Ruffer or Tausch (haven't forgotten about him) could be at least as well; and I would suspect better.
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:26 Kevin - West Lafayette
1:29
Eric Hansen:
Kevin, ND's defensive philosophy is stop the run first, then get the offense off the field. They're 25th in third-down conversion defense. STILL, with the pressure they can generate with their front and with a veteran secondary, I too would have expected more interceptions. ... As far as Brindza, Kelly said last night, it's not a matter of a tired leg, but a freshman being a freshman.

One key to the IRISH success this year has been their offensive line. They are very athletic and have become dominant. Who do they lose to graduation this year and how does it look next year in terms of filling in the open spots?
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:30 John Atlanta
1:32
Eric Hansen:
John, ND will lose the right side of the line -- Trevor Robinson and Taylor Dever. I think Christian Lombard and Tate NIchols will do a great job stepping in at right tackle. The coaches love Hanratty at guard. Nick Martin can play anywhere and they might find a spot for him. The other option is bringing back Golic as a starting guard/backup center.

Eric, how concerned should the Irish be about BC's stud LB, Kuechly (spelling?)?
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:32 Dave

Great spelling. Kuechly is amazing, but he does not have the surrounding cast he's had in the past. Last year, BC was the No. 1 rushing defense. This year, BC is 62nd.

What is your perception of Kelly's popularity amongst the alumni? I'm a young alumni and I think we are generally supportive of some of the changes, but I know he hasn't held off on pushing for radical change. What is your sense of how the school and alumni base are feeling about him these days?
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:34 Sandy, Ann Arbor, MI
1:36
Eric Hansen:
Great question, Sandy. I think it's really mixed. They want so BADLY for Kelly to be THE guy. In his defense, every time there is a setback, they feel it four times as much because of the failings of past regimes. I think the player rift confused a lot of people. My advice is to be patient. There is a lot of adjustments that go into this job, even in year 2. I think we'll see what BK is all about -- for better, for worse -- in 2012.

[Comment From DrueDrue: ]
First time but thanks for filling a much wanted service and doing a great job. My question is that we see small, quick, elusive RB's around the country that wow everyone. It seems ND shys away from this type of player, opting for kids over 200 lbs. at 5" 10" or bigger. I am not suggesting ND needs a stable of this type, but is there a reason we don't see this type of player on the roster in general?
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:36 Drue
1:38
Eric Hansen:
Drue, thanks,. ND does have a certain recruiting "profile" at the various positions. That doesn't mean they don't go outside of it, but it takes an exceptional talent to make them go down that road.

Eric, I know Cierre and Jonas are good friends, but do you sense any ill feeling from Cierre to be splitting the carries, and not starting the last 3 games? Also, do you see us employing another power back next year as much as we have with Jonas, or do you think Cierre will see a heavier workload with Jonas gone? I think Cierre has the potential to be a premier back nationally next year if he gets say 75% of the carries
Thursday November 17, 2011 1:38 JR, Bloomington

Eric Hansen:
Cierre and Jonas have the best chemistry I've ever seen in a competitive situation like that. They truly make each other better. I don't see any resentment on Cierre's part. In fact,. Cierre told Jonas, if he had a body like his, he's win the Heisman. Next year, George Atkinson will get a long look (not a power back). William Mahone, an incoming freshman, may fill that role.

If ND whiffs on some of their recruiting targets, such as Marshall, Agholor, is there any chance they reach out to Tommy Schutt...or has that door closed permanently? I'm still bummed they passed on a Top 100 talent, even moreso if they wind up with scholarships to spare.

Luis (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) - Hi Eric, love your chats! I was wondering if the Gunner Kiel to ND rumor as an early enrollee has been confirmed? All this "non-story-quietness" makes me suspect that he's already decided to enroll at ND in January, and that he's already give rights to one or several journalists to break the story once he enrolls. What are your thoughts?

Hey Luis, Gracias, buddy. Gunner Kiel's intention -- wherever he ends up -- is to enroll early and participate in spring practice. As far as the rest of our question/theory -- if that's the case, it's definitely not me.

Good point about the Washington game. I was at that one (and NYC last year), and it seemed like comparatively, the excitement was lacking this past weekend. I think part of that was the NFL stadium and part of it was that Maryland is pretty bad this year. If we are going to play Shamrock games in big stadiums like that, we need to play opponents that will draw a crowd (though I suppose no one could have predicted they would be 2-7 this year. When it was scheduled, it probably seemed like a good idea to play MD so close to their campus). I would like to see a return to Yankee Stadium, and if possible, for the games to be scheduled more strategically around fall break for the students.

He needs Alabama's defense and Julio Jones to do that. He won't lead ND to a national title, I believe, unless he is a top 10 guy in passing efficiency and gets proficient with his deep throws and cuts down the turnovers. It is possible he could accomplish all three.

Greeting Eric! I have been out of commission the last few weeks; however, I couldn’t miss last home game chat. I’m guessing chats are like time-outs and I can’t save ‘em for future chats. I must first start out with giving props to Manti Te’o- I called him out for what he said at the pep rally prior to USC. I only called him out because I have become accustomed to holding him to such a high standard. He has handled himself in a very mature manner and it makes me proud that he plays for us. With that said I hope we see very little of him on Saturday- we’ll need him full go for Stanford- not to mention next year. In my book Harrison Smith and M. Floyd will go down as “corner turning guys”- meaning they were responsible for restoring the Irish. No we’re not there yet, but these guys came to ND on the hills of a 41-14 beat down by LSU. At one point their record was 15-21- they could have jumped ship last year especially Floyd- they said no. These men knew that they made a commitment and they were going to see it through. R. Blanton should go down as one of the all time great DB’s. To the other 30 plus- I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your blood, sweat, and tears. May the Irish Spirit follow you the rest of your lives. Go IRISH!

Eric, You continue to be my favorite "coverer" of ND football. To use Brian Kelly's words--"Your consistent" and good. Question---assuming no BCS bowl, is the December 29 Champs Bowl the only bowl ND can go to or are their others (depending upon conferences not meeting theior quotas re:tie-ins).
Thursday November 17, 2011 2:07 richard, rochester, ny
2:09
Eric Hansen:
Richard. thanks. ND's only contracted bowls are the BCS bowls (highly unlikely this year) and the Champs (highly likely). If they were to fall short with both, then they are a free agent and can line up with a bowl that can't fulfill its conference tine-in. The Sun Bowl last year was such a situation. So was the Hawaii Bowl in 2008.
