Live Chat: Talk Notre Dame football with Eric Hansen(03/22/2012)
12:05
Eric Hansen:
Welcome to the South Bend-has-become-a-tropical-paradise version of Notre Dame live football chat. We'll do this every Thursday at noon during spring football with the exception of Easter week. Per usual, whining, spitting, scratching, swearing and bare feet are not only discouraged, they are prohibited. And about all, no wagering. Finally, no making fun of my NCAA bracket. Without further patter, off we go.

Do you See Tee Shepard maybe returning to ND! i believe ND had 2 players who left and came back
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:06 Robert
12:06
Eric Hansen:
I do not believe that's a scenario that's in play, unfortunately.

Do you know if the Blue/Gold game will be on TV like it was last year?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:07 Sean
12:08
Eric Hansen:
It definitely will be. It starts at 1:30 p.m. (EDT) on April 21. NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus) will do the honors.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:08 Eric Hansen

[Comment From PaulPaul: ]
out of all the returning 5th year seniors. who do you see will have the best year?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:09 Paul
12:09
Eric Hansen:
I'd give a slight edge to Jamoris Slaughter over Braxston Cave.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:09 Eric Hansen
12:10
[Comment From Roger, DallasRoger, Dallas: ]
Can you offer any insight into Troy's switch to TE? Is it because it's something he wanted? Was he not impressive at LB? It seems like there's a lot of talent at TE already, or does this mean they plan to use him with Eifert and maybe move Eifert outside some?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:10 Roger, Dallas
12:12
Eric Hansen:
Roger, I'm actually writing about this for Sat's paper. Here are the CliffsNotes: ND is loaded at drop linebacker, plus they use a safety and take that position off the field when they play teams that spread them out. That limits Niklas and the others. You still have Shembo, Spond and Ben Councell. On the other side of the coin, there was the feeling that Niklas could be dynamic as an offensive player. Stanford recruited him as TE. He's faster than any tight end they have -- and one of the best athletes on the team. It allows Kelly a lot of flexibility with formations to disguise plays and create mismatches. And Troy loves the move.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:12 Eric Hansen
12:14
Eric Hansen:
Troy's primary responsibility will be as an in-line blocker, but I think you'll see him catch more passes than your typical second tight end. Plus, when Eifert does leave, he is a guy who can move into that role.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:14 Eric Hansen
12:14
[Comment From AndrewAndrew: ]
With Niklas at tight end now do you see both him and Eifert being used as pass catchers or will Troy mostly be a blocker?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:14 Andrew
12:14
Eric Hansen:
sorry about that glitch
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:14 Eric Hansen
12:15
[Comment From Justin, chicagoJustin, chicago: ]
Does Brian Kelly know what hes doing with Davonte Neal? CB or WR? Hes a Playmaker on both sides of the ball!
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:15 Justin, chicago
12:16
Eric Hansen:
Justin, Kelly said right now there are no plans to move any of the offensive recruits to corner, but he did hint that could change in June. My sense is if they do move someone, it would be KeiVarae Russell rather than Neal. Kelly likes taller corners, and Russell would be more of a fit there.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:16 Eric Hansen
12:16
[Comment From Bill from OhioBill from Ohio: ]
Good to have the chats back.....missed ya!!! Do you sense a different offensive philosophy coming from Chuck Martin? If so....what might we expect?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:16 Bill from Ohio
12:17
Eric Hansen:
Bill, thank you and welcome back. I haven't had the chance to talk to Martin yet, but the sense I get is that he brings more tweaks to an offense he and Kelly are familiar with rather than changes. I think the biggest thing they both want to see is fewer turnovers. Hence, the four-man QB competition when you have a starter returning.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:17 Eric Hansen
12:18
[Comment From RobertRobert: ]
Now that Harrison Smith is gone. who will be the leader for the captain?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:18 Robert
12:18
Eric Hansen:
My guess would be Slaughter and Manti on defense, Cave and Eifert on offense.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:18 Eric Hansen
12:19
[Comment From GMoney, CharlotteGMoney, Charlotte: ]
Do you think there will ever be any home and home series reestablished with any teams from the SEC? It was fun to go to a November game against Tennessee or LSU instead of Syracuse, Connecticut or Army or other teams who don't travel as well.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:19 GMoney, Charlotte
12:20
Eric Hansen:
I addressed that with athletic director Jack Swarbrick last year and it didn't sound optimistic that was in play anytime soon. More realistic would be one of the offsite home games. which they're now calling "The Shamrock Series."
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:20 Eric Hansen
12:20
[Comment From John from NewnanJohn from Newnan: ]
Wwe have another year determining who the starting QB will be, how do you see it playing out? Just how will BK determine the number one?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:20 John from Newnan
12:22
Eric Hansen:
John, he's leveled the playing field, skinnying down the offense so all four can be evaluated through a similar lens. I think the person who emerges is the one who makes the best decisions as well as making the offense dynamic. It's like picking a winner in basketball from the first 8 seconds of the game, but I like Andrew Hendrix's chances at this point.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:22 Eric Hansen
12:22
[Comment From DougDoug: ]
Is the qb competition really wide open. I hope so.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:22 Doug
12:22
Eric Hansen:
I really believe it is.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:22 Eric Hansen
12:22
[Comment From PaulPaul: ]
Do you think Grace will make a push to start opposite Manti?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:22 Paul
12:23
Eric Hansen:
I think the coaching staff really likes Grace at Manti's position -- middle linebacker -- and not as a sidekick at the Will linebacker. He made a strong impression last fall. Dan Fox is the man to beat at Will.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:23 Eric Hansen
12:24
[Comment From SeanSean: ]
Good news, I enjoyed watching it last year down here in SEC Country when pretty much all I get here in Charelston, SC is the Gamecocks and Clemson.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:24 Sean
12:24
Eric Hansen:
You may want to watch the spring game in person this year. We're having SEC type weather up here.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:24 Eric Hansen
12:24
[Comment From AndrewAndrew: ]
What's your prediction on who will start at WR this fall?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:24 Andrew
12:26
Eric Hansen:
It's difficult until I see Davonte Beal, but I think TJ Jones is a lock. In the slot, you have Riddick/Toma. If John Goodman has a good spring, he's the third. If not, DaVaris Daniels steps in.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:26 Eric Hansen
12:26
[Comment From Chris from San DiegoChris from San Diego: ]
You are more informed than I, but if Kelly were planning to move K Russell to CB, what advantage would there be to waiting?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:26 Chris from San Diego
12:28
Eric Hansen:
KeiVarae isn't on campus yet, so they want to see how the other guys do before they make that decision. If they move a freshman there, they'll be doing so with the thought of this being a help in the long term, not the short. Tee Shepard was the only guy in the class who was accomplished enough at the two deeps to make an impact in the two deeps THIS season.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:28 Eric Hansen
12:28
[Comment From Mike ThoroldMike Thorold: ]
Hey ERic great to see that your back, Do you think that the move of Niklas will allow ND to run some sets that Standford ran last year with 3 TE, and create some match up problems?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:28 Mike Thorold
12:28
Eric Hansen:
Bingo.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:28 Eric Hansen
12:28
[Comment From Beth Lansing, MIBeth Lansing, MI: ]
So happy to come to the Trib site to find a chat going on. I have missed these. Did Tee Shepard have a chance to play this year? Will this make an already shaky defensive backfield more susceptible to big pass plays? Can you tell us what happened with Tee?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:28 Beth Lansing, MI
12:30
Eric Hansen:
Thanks Beth, welcome back. Tee had a very good chance to play, maybe even start. I think depth is more of a concern that the frontline starters. As to what happened, I plan to have an update in the SB Trib soon on that.

[Comment From billbill: ]
how is cam roberson looking? he looked promising before his injury.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:30 bill
12:31
Eric Hansen:
Bill, really can't tell much now. I want to see him in pads first. I know Kelly really liked the pre-knee injury version of him. He's been gone from the game for a long, long time. I'll have a better feel in another week or so.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:31 Eric Hansen

[Comment From David from ColumbusDavid from Columbus: ]
What's up Eric? What is the coaching doing to eliminate the red zone turnovers?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:31 David from Columbus
12:32
Eric Hansen:
Hey David. Trying new options at quarterback. That's the position where most of the turnovers occurred.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:32 Eric Hansen
12:32
[Comment From Don Mattessich Stamford,Don Mattessich Stamford,: ]
Greetings Eric from warm Stamford, CT. What is your take on the starting CB positions? I know it's early, but who do you think will start in 2012?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:32 Don Mattessich Stamford,
12:34
Eric Hansen:
I think Bennett Jackson will do well. He's purported to be the fastest player on the team. He's extremely intelligent. Good tackler. Consistency will be his challenge. Lo Wood is the favorite at the other spot, but I like Josh Atkinson to emerge there. I think that's the spot that will be challenged early by opposing defenses.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:34 Eric Hansen
12:34
Eric Hansen:
I mean offenses. Sorry brain cramp.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:34 Eric Hansen
12:34
[Comment From Matt in PhillyMatt in Philly: ]
Out of the whole team I am most concerned with the cornerback position. Is Jackson ready? Has Woods made strides? Who else is going to step up? Can you make he feel a little better about this position? Any predictions?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:34 Matt in Philly
12:35
Eric Hansen:
I think it's an obvious concern. I think the good news is the Irish can cover that weakness a bit with their pass rush and with scheme. You won't see a lot of man coverage -- early in the season anyway. But let's let spring play out. There's the potential to surprise there.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:35 Eric Hansen
12:35
[Comment From AyersAyers: ]
Eric, with so much riding on a good start to this comin season is there anyway Tommy Rees is not the starter against Navy? I see Golson doing some wildcat.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:35 Ayers
12:36
Eric Hansen:
I would be surprised if Rees is the starter. I love his mental toughness, but I don't think he gives ND the best chance to win.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:36 Eric Hansen
12:36
[Comment From Roger, DallasRoger, Dallas: ]
Any word on how Kelly and the staff think the rule changes will affect the team?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:36 Roger, Dallas
12:38
Eric Hansen:
I wrote about the special teams rule changes today. It's in the notebook that leads with Gunner Kiel: http://tinyurl.com/6llhffb

[Comment From Matt in PhillyMatt in Philly: ]
So you think Daniels is third behind Neal and Goodman? I thought he was the next great hope at WR.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:38 Matt in Philly
12:39
Eric Hansen:
If I said that, I must have been looking directly into the sun. I don't think I said DD was behind Neal. He will have to beat out Goodman. I think this will be a much deeper rotation than last year, whoever starts.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:39 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Shawn From CincinnatiShawn From Cincinnati: ]
Eric, hope you got a vacation since the Recruiting Coverage... in terms of recruiting, is Notre Dame off to a slow start for 2013, or does it just seem that way?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:40 Shawn From Cincinnati
12:42
Eric Hansen:
When you look at what Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan are doing, it casts that impression. But recruiting is a marathon and the Irish are still well-positioned with a lot of prospects they covet. By the end of April, we'll have a much better gauge. Big Junior Day on Saturday. Bob Wieneke is writing about it.

I read that Heggie was on the 2nd team OL during practice yesterday. Do you anticipate him to stay there this season?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:43 Paul in Waltham, MA
12:44
Eric Hansen:
Bruce Heggie has come a long way. Having said that, I wouldn't get charged up about the depth chart from the first day in shorts. But he is making good progress.

[Comment From Steven from PlymouthSteven from Plymouth: ]
Glad you're back, Eric! Thanks for taking our questions. I noticed on Irish Sports Daily that Danny Spond was in at OLB with the #1's while Ishaq Williams was with the #2's. After watching Ishaq last year, I felt as though perhaps he didn't meet his high expectations. What are your thoughts? Is he not with the #1's because of talent? His adjustments to college football? Please explain!
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:44 Steven from Plymouth
12:46
Eric Hansen:
Again, don't get caught up in early depth charts. It's like rating a movie by watching the previews from other movies. Ishaq is an amazing athlete who was going to have an adjustment playing outside linebacker in ND's scheme. There was no way around it. I expect him to be a significant contributor this year, though I'm not sure he'll necessarily be a starter. A lot depends on whether Prince Shembo ends up at the Cat or the drop.

[Comment From Pete Coto De CazaPete Coto De Caza: ]
Eric - send some recruiters to Orange County CA. Top three teams in the State were in a 7 mile radius out here. Need more local boys like Troy Nickolas. Do something about the SB weather while your at it!
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:47 Pete Coto De Caza
12:48
Eric Hansen:
Well, Brian Kelly picked a great time to have a bunch of recruits in. The weather here is unreal. I think we have 8 straight days of record highs with a ninth expected today.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:48 Eric Hansen
12:48
[Comment From Joe from VirginiaJoe from Virginia: ]
With the recent de-commits before signing day and now Tee leaving, what do you think the coaching staff is going to do differently this year in recruiting? Seems like the next class will have an outsized impact on the BK's success in South Bend.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:48 Joe from Virginia
12:50
Eric Hansen:
I think they're going to stay the course. The loss of cornerbacks at the end kind of fluky if you think about it.. Darby decommitting was not a surprise, but Tee's situation was and Yuri Wright with Twitter, who saw that coming? CB will definitely be a huge priority, however.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:50 Eric Hansen
12:50
[Comment From Jordan from CincinnatiJordan from Cincinnati: ]
Hi Eric, yet another question about the QBs. Do you have an idea of whether Kelly wants to name a starter before fall camp? Followup question, do you think his experiment with the 2 quarterback system is over after last season?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:50 Jordan from Cincinnati
12:51
Eric Hansen:
I think BK wants to be as non-committal as he can on both fronts. My sense is he won't name a starter until August, even if he knows who it's going to be. The longer Kiel stays in the race, the more protracted naming a starter will be. It Hendrix or Golson becomes the starter, I do not think you will see the two-QB system.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:51 Eric Hansen
12:54
Eric Hansen:
Well, for one, I misspelled Neal. That was my biggest mistake. I think it's fair to say DD has to beat out the established players, and he's been impressive in winter workouts. Neal is a wild card, because he's so fast. But he's not ahead of anyone at this point. The thing you have to understand Matt is if you make a change on the depth chart with a young player over an established player, the whole team needs to see over and over that the younger player is better before you make the change. It's way to early for that to unfold.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:54 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Matt in PhillyMatt in Philly: ]
FYI. Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but it seemed like you but Daniels behind everyone. "It's difficult until I see Davonte Beal, but I think TJ Jones is a lock. In the slot, you have Riddick/Toma. If John Goodman has a good spring, he's the third. If not, DaVaris Daniels steps in. "

[Comment From John, Fort WayneJohn, Fort Wayne: ]
I am very concerned about opening in Ireland against Navy and then not having a bye week especially when all the NFL players who play the annual game in London say they need the bye week they get to recover. Why would ND schedule this game in Ireland on 9/1 when they could have played the week before and been the only meaningful football game or at least have followed with a bye week. What has Swarbrick said to you about reasons for this ridiculous scheduling as I know you are probably concerned as well and it ranks right up there with the green out against Michigan State and the blue towels you couldn't see at night. i can see the Irish losing to Purdue as a result
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:55 John, Fort Wayne
12:56
Eric Hansen:
John, I have the same concerns you do. I suppose the thought is these are young people, and they are resilient. I think a bye week would have made a lot of sense. I haven't addressed this specifically with Jack S. but my sense is they didn't want to use the bye so early in the season.
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:56 Eric Hansen

[Comment From DrewDrew: ]
Mr.Hansen-Love listening to your pre game show and the questions you ask during practice. I have a question, is NIcklaus an actual deep threat? I'm feeling more of a blocker and thats it. What do you think?
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:57 Drew
12:58
Eric Hansen:
I think he can to both. When asked about how he looked at tight end yesterday, Jamoris Slaughter said he thinks NIklas can evolve into a first-round draft choice. The guy is incredibly versatile and is one of the best athletes on the team. I really like this move.

Eric who will be the starting safeties? I do not have much faith in Motta's all around game, I know he can tackle, but I dont think he could cover a table with a cloth.

Wow, I'd love to see Regis out there. Slaughter could play there, but I like him in the heart of the defense. I think the coaching staff wants to see what they have there before moving more pieces. Let's just see how the next couple of weeks play out.

[Comment From John -- Bethesda, MDJohn -- Bethesda, MD: ]
Eric -- As always, a great discussion ...Just a hunch, but if the "Gunner" is head and shoulders above the other QB contenders, I think BK will start him or, at least, give him considerable playing time from Game One on ... apparently he's a very quick leaner, so mastering the playbook may not be a problem ... which one of the other three is most likely to bail? Speaking of the Gunner, I think it's time to bring back nicknames ... as far as I could determne, nobody mentioned Panelli's nickname was Pep in his obit, and, of course, he was paired with Emil "Six-Yard" Sitko ... days of yesteryear were fun
Thursday March 22, 2012 1:03 John -- Bethesda, MD
1:06
Eric Hansen:
You are on record with your Kiel prediction. As to who will bail, I'm sure there will be one or two who initially feel that way. As Evan Sharpley mentioned in my story the other day, sometimes the great educational opportunity at ND is what keeps you patient with the football side. I think it's going to be really tough for whomever finishes No. 4 in the four-man race, but we'll see.

1:07
Eric Hansen:
There's so many details to be worked out, and I know people are antsy because they see talk about conference champs only, but I don't think they will exclude the Irish. I think what they're trying to stay away from is what happened this season with two teams from the same conference playing for the title.

Is the coaching staff looking at/expecting Eilar Hardy to be a significant contributor this season or is he going to need another year?
Thursday March 22, 2012 1:07 Tom C., Chicago
1:08
Eric Hansen:
It depends if he stays at safety or plays corner. You lose Slaughter, Motta and McCarthy all after this season and Collinsworth after next, so it's time for him to make his mark to be part of that next wave of safeties.

[Comment From Marty, San AntonioMarty, San Antonio: ]
Eric, Welcome back Sir. One question: I am still concerned about speed with our linebackers. Is anyone stepping up that can cover east and west? I think we get beat on corners way too often to real equate this to an elite defense.
Thursday March 22, 2012 1:10 Marty, San Antonio
1:12
Eric Hansen:
Hey Marty. Three of our four linebackers will be the same people, so I'm not sure that's the answer you want to hear. There's speed in the younger classes. I think it's more technique than speed at times. Yes, unless there are surprises at CB, it's tough to call it an elite defense. But let's not get on the ledge too quick. Let's let this play out a little bit.

Great to have ND Football back on the Radar!! Eric, given how well our freshman did last year and given that our sophomore and juniors are OBVIOULSLY going to be a year older, wiser and stronger...even though we lost Floyd, Smith, etc...do you think we are in a rebuilding period or just an adjusting period that may actually be more talented as a whole this coming season? I mean, Floyd was double covered last season and our QB seemed to only have eyes for him. I figure, this way, the field spreads, ND comes in under the radar and POW! - More Wins... what are your thoughts?
Thursday March 22, 2012 1:17 Joe Zampelli, Maryland
1:19
Eric Hansen:
There's a lot of wallop in that question. Let's see if I can get to the essence of it. Floyd is a big loss, no matter how you slice it. The offense can be dynamic with fewer turnovers, with more options and formations and with a quarterback who, quite frankly, isn't one-dimensional. Not sure if I answered your question.

Does Brian Kelly know what hes doing with Davonte Neal? CB or WR? Hes a Playmaker on both sides of the ball!
Thursday March 22, 2012 12:15 Justin, chicago
12:16
Eric Hansen:
Justin, Kelly said right now there are no plans to move any of the offensive recruits to corner, but he did hint that could change in June. My sense is if they do move someone, it would be KeiVarae Russell rather than Neal. Kelly likes taller corners, and Russell would be more of a fit there.

Thursday March 22, 2012 12:22 Paul

I think the coaching staff really likes Grace at Manti's position -- middle linebacker -- and not as a sidekick at the Will linebacker. He made a strong impression last fall. Dan Fox is the man to beat at Will.

Thursday March 22, 2012 12:24 Andrew

Eric Hansen:
It's difficult until I see Davonte Beal, but I think TJ Jones is a lock. In the slot, you have Riddick/Toma. If John Goodman has a good spring, he's the third. If not, DaVaris Daniels steps in.

12:30

Thanks Beth, welcome back. Tee had a very good chance to play, maybe even start. I think depth is more of a concern that the frontline starters. As to what happened, I plan to have an update in the SB Trib soon on that.

12:35
Eric Hansen:
I think it's an obvious concern. I think the good news is the Irish can cover that weakness a bit with their pass rush and with scheme. You won't see a lot of man coverage -- early in the season anyway. But let's let spring play out. There's the potential to surprise there.

When you look at what Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan are doing, it casts that impression. But recruiting is a marathon and the Irish are still well-positioned with a lot of prospects they covet.

Why won't they put TJ Jones at the slot?

He can play there, but they like Riddick/Toma there for now. I think Neal probably ends up there as well.

If you attend the coaches clinic (and I believe fans can do that if you sign up and pay the fee), you can come to the April 14 practice.

Any surprises to help at corner? Can Slaughter play corner? Collinsworth? Tausch?? Nix?? The Leprechaun??? Regis???

Eric Hansen:
Wow, I'd love to see Regis out there. Slaughter could play there, but I like him in the heart of the defense. I think the coaching staff wants to see what they have there before moving more pieces. Let's just see how the next couple of weeks play out.

4 in the four-man race, but we'll see.

have recently read a few articles about the BCS moving to a 4 team playoff, do you think it will happen soon and where would that leave our beloved Irish?

Eric Hansen:
There's so many details to be worked out, and I know people are antsy because they see talk about conference champs only, but I don't think they will exclude the Irish. I think what they're trying to stay away from is what happened this season with two teams from the same conference playing for the title.

Is the coaching staff looking at/expecting Eilar Hardy to be a significant contributor this season or is he going to need another year?

Eric Hansen:
It depends if he stays at safety or plays corner. You lose Slaughter, Motta and McCarthy all after this season and Collinsworth after next, so it's time for him to make his mark to be part of that next wave of safeties.

I love it. My initial thought was he would be the No. 1 candidate at right tackle, but with Nichols and Prestwood so promising, I like this move.

Possibly on special teams. All of those young safeties are going to get a look, not so much for prominent roles this year, but because of the turnover that's coming soon at that position.

Eric Hansen:
There's a lot of wallop in that question. Let's see if I can get to the essence of it. Floyd is a big loss, no matter how you slice it. The offense can be dynamic with fewer turnovers, with more options and formations and with a quarterback who, quite frankly, isn't one-dimensional. Not sure if I answered your question.

What is the word on the street with the locker room? Will Kelly continue his sideline antics, or did he learn? I was at the Stanford game, and the team looked detached and defeated emotionally.
