Live Chat: Talk Notre Dame football with Eric Hansen(04/12/2012)
12:05
Eric Hansen:
Welcome to the frozen tundra version of Notre Dame football live chat. Yes, it was that cold this morning. But we press on with you ND football questions. Please include your hometown with your name and question. Please no spitting, swearing, whining, bare feet or wagering. Please no 17-part questions. Ok, let's rock this.

[Comment From ACross (St. Louis)ACross (St. Louis): ]
What's your best guess on Run-Pass this season? It would appear that there will be a heavier reliance on the running game this season.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:09 ACross (St. Louis)
12:11
Eric Hansen:
Hey ACross. Last year ND ran 48 percent running plays. I think this year's ratio depends upon who wins the quarterback race. I still feel it was ultimately be Andrew Hendrix, and I'd push the ratio to 50-50. If somehow freshman Gunner Kiel came out on top, I think it would be over 50, just to take the pressure off of him, especially early in the season.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:11 Eric Hansen

[Comment From KevinKevin: ]
I'm not going to ask you who will start at QB this season, but I'm wondering what your thoughts are in 2013 and beyond. They have a commitment from Malik Zaire...hard to believe they will want 5 scholarship QB's on the roster in 2013.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:11 Kevin
12:14
Eric Hansen:
Kevin, believe it or not, a lot of schools have 4-5 sometimes 6 scholarship QBs on the roster. What they don't have is the history of QBs transferring and/or moving to another position in such great numbers as ND has in the post-Holtz Era, ND's challenge at the moment, is you have so many bunched together in the lower classes. Ultimately, it always works better when you have one in each class. I do think it's going to be interesting to see who ends up fourth on the depth chart and how that player handles it.

[Comment From Steven from PlymouthSteven from Plymouth: ]
Amid all of the speculation, I just want to go on record. Aaron Lynch's personal reasons will not be made public anytime soon--if ever. It does seem, though, that if there was any lingering doubt whether or not he was committed to the Irish program moving forward, he and Notre Dame needed this falling out. Aaron indirectly expressed some doubt during an interview that was broadcast on UND.com, and it was clear that this was something that he needed to deal with as opposed to sweeping it under the rug. After realizing ND is best for his future moving forward, he realizes he is in fact Irish. Hopefully the doubt has been eradicated, whatever it may have been. What do you think, Eric?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:14 Steven from Plymouth
12:18
Eric Hansen:
Steven, the media -- including me -- have not had the chance to speak with Aaron since he returned. In fact, since he first took the field last season, he has been available for interviews twice -- once before the Pitt game and then earlier this spring. So it's hard to get a read. I will say this, I love how real the kid is in expressing who he is and what he's feeling. There's not a phony bone in his body. Having said that, it's more common than you think for young players to have doubts -- especially when they've come such a long way. Aaron's mom lives in Ohio now, but he's from Florida, and South Bend is VERY different. I think Alice Lynch is a tremendously strong person who has great influence on her son and will get him to see the big picture when it starts to get fuzzy for him. That's my take.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:18 Eric Hansen
12:18
[Comment From Roger, DallasRoger, Dallas: ]
Do you have any information on the Lynch situation? It seems like this would have been a non-story in the pre-Twitter days.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:18 Roger, Dallas
12:21
Eric Hansen:
I actually think Twitter kind of shed some light on the fact that he was going to return. I'm not sure that was the reason it blew up to the extent it did in the beginning. Again, I think Alice Lynch sees the value in Aaron being at Notre Dame and I think Aaron is back to buying in at this time.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:21 Eric Hansen
12:21
[Comment From Jim (Wash DC)Jim (Wash DC): ]
Eric, you recently mentioned that you thought Hendrix would win the qb job - is that a hunch or is that guess based on information from inside the program?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:21 Jim (Wash DC)
12:23
Eric Hansen:
That's my hunch. I'll get my best and longest look at the four quarterbacks Saturday during a practice that's completely open to the media (and attendees of the coaches clinic). The rumblings you hear are that Rees has performed the best to this point, which given his experience and mental toughness is to be expected. But this is about who can take you to the BCS level, and in that formula a player's perceived ceiling and limitations come into play. That would seem to hurt Rees in the long run.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:23 Eric Hansen
12:23
[Comment From MIke ThoroldMIke Thorold: ]
Hey Eric hope your Easter went well. Read the other day that the Irish are lining up in tHe I formation at times, Do they have a back that can lead block or are they just trying to create more match up problems?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:23 MIke Thorold
12:25
Eric Hansen:
Mike, I haven't seen the I-formation during our media windows, but I don't doubt that they'd play with that. One thing Chuck Martin has done in conjunction with Brian Kelly this spring is putting offensive personnel groups on the field that are versatile, and then putting the defense in guessing positions by varying the formations. I would imagine if they're going to run some I, they'll put a tight end as the lead blocker in the backfield.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:25 Eric Hansen
12:25
[Comment From Rick from MarkhamRick from Markham: ]
Eric what is the word on ishaq williams? Looking at the 3 on 3 video he is a beast. How is he progressing this spring.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:25 Rick from Markham
12:27
Eric Hansen:
Physically, he's always been a beast. Now his work habits and understanding of the defense are catching up with that physical talent. I had a story on that earlier this spring. It was like a light came on for Ishaq, where he gets it now and is buying into what the coaches are telling him.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:27 Eric Hansen
12:27
[Comment From Jack from SBJack from SB: ]
Should we take Coach Kelly's compliments regarding Bennett Jackson and any other "spring surprises" with a grain of salt? I remember the praise for Darius Fleming and others that never came to fruition. If so, could you throw out a few names that have surprised you as an objective observer? Additionally, how about a few names of those that will be a pleasant surprise next season?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:27 Jack from SB
12:31
Eric Hansen:
Great question. I think we've all choked before on gulping too much spring Kool-aid. . I do think Bennett Jackson will do a good job. If BK starts bragging about the other cornerback spot, I will be skeptical. Not counting the guys who are not yet on campus, I don't think you'll see someone just blow up the depth chart like we have seen sometimes in the past. The surprises will be more subtle. The players I will put in that category are Troy Niklas, Amir Carlisle, Christian Lombard, Ben Councell, Eilar Hardy. None earth-shattering, but guys who definitely are making -- or will make -- significant progress.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:31 Eric Hansen
12:33
[Comment From Rick from MarkhamRick from Markham: ]
Eric with all the slot receivers and the new hybrid running/slot back when looking at run versus pass what is the definition of a pass when you look at bubble screens etc. ie plays that are actual passes but more of a longer pitch out.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:33 Rick from Markham
12:34
Eric Hansen:
Rick, they may seem and play out more like a run than a pass, but when I do my math -- and believe me, that's a challenge to do any kind a math -- a pass is a pass and a run is a run. I do think if Hendrix or Kiel emerges as the No. 1 you will see a more aggressive vertical passing game in addition to the kinds of plays you just mentioned.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:34 Eric Hansen
12:35
[Comment From Chris - Raleigh, NCChris - Raleigh, NC: ]
Do you think a starter will be named soon after the Spring game or do you think it bleeds in the fall? Shouldn't a starter be chosen sooner rather than later to start getting #1 reps for someone?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:35 Chris - Raleigh, NC
12:37
Eric Hansen:
Chris, I would be shocked if they named someone after spring. And having talked to Evan Sharpley about the last four-man QB competition, the longer it goes, the less continuity there is in your offense. However, naming the right guy supersedes everything else. So if it takes until late August, it takes until late August. My guess? It will take until late August.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:37 Eric Hansen
12:37
[Comment From Brad from South BendBrad from South Bend: ]
Hey Eric. I got my plate of fried cheese to keep warm on this frozen tundra edition of the chat. With the follow out of several recruits not signing with the Irish this past cycle, are there any of the current verbal commitments that need to be 'babysat' and how much of an impact do you think kids like Malik Zaire recruiting his peers helps, if at all, in the recruiting department?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:37 Brad from South Bend
12:41
Eric Hansen:
Brad, fried cheese?
I want to party with you, man. Love it.
OK, where were we? There's not a guy in the class yet that jumps out as the wandering type. Darby set the alarm bells off last year, because the guy was looking around ALMOST as soon as he committed. I do think Zaire, Elmer, Onwualu keeping the group tight can make a difference. Think back to 2007, when ND was going through a 3-9 season and Dayne Crist held that class together with really minimal defections.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:41 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Paul Galway, IrelandPaul Galway, Ireland: ]
Hey Eric, delighted to have the live chat back - great articles as always in SBT......best writer on the beat! Really excited about ND coming to Dublin for the opening game. Tickets sold out here in about 2 hours - big demand.....55k capacity in the Aviva Stadium. Is there much excitement from the players and coaching staff on coming to Ireland?? Could help in recruitment?? Some good golf courses over here for them to play aswell!!!
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:42 Paul Galway, Ireland
12:44
Eric Hansen:
Paul, nice to hear from you. Thanks for all the kind words. I owe you a Guiness. I think the players and coaches are pretty excited about it, no question. I believe the walk-ons are going to get a chance to go on the trip too, which is pretty cool. I doubt anyone is allowed to bring their clubs, but the fans will. I'm not sure it will help in recruiting unless another game like this is in the works. Those players won't have a chance to play in it.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:44 Eric Hansen
12:45
[Comment From john from Powayjohn from Poway: ]
What's your take on where we'll be with the DB's in the Fall esp at corner?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:45 john from Poway
12:47
Eric Hansen:
I mentioned this the other day in an analysis piece. I think the staff is set with Bennett Jackson. If the Lo Wood/Josh Atkinson battle doesn't give them the consistency they're looking for, then you have to look at Slaughter moving there or perhaps try to get someone like KeiVarae Russell ready in a very small window. The Irish have some nice options at safety. Slaughter, Motta and Collinsworth are the top three.

[Comment From Franklin LaCrosse, WiFranklin LaCrosse, Wi: ]
I am hearing that Lombard is settling in very nicely at RT. Do you think he starts there on Sept. 1?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:48 Franklin LaCrosse, Wi
12:49
Eric Hansen:
I would be shocked if he doesn't. The real battle on the line, in my opinion, rests in whether Mike Golic is a better right guard than Tate Nichols is a right tackle? If Golic wins the battle, Lombard starts at RT. If NIchols wins, then Lombard is the RG.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:49 Eric Hansen
12:49
[Comment From SteveSteve: ]
Eric, Martin's self-deprecation of his coaching knowledge has gotten a lot of buzz (what doesn't come under scrutiny on ND boards). What's your take on how he's gone about his new job.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:49 Steve
12:50
Eric Hansen:
There's been a lot of positive feedback from the players. They like an offense that's simplified. They like its versatility. They like his confidence (he's not self-deprecating on the practice field), his personality. I've said all along this move could be a real wild card.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:50 Eric Hansen
12:51
[Comment From Charles (Springfield)Charles (Springfield): ]
Hi Eric: Any word on how Golson is progressing this spring? Do you think we'll see him move to another position or transfer if he ends up third or fourth on the depth chart?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:51 Charles (Springfield)
12:52
Eric Hansen:
Charles, I'll have a much better assessment after Saturday's open (to media) practice. In the snippets I see so far, accuracy seems to be his biggest challenge. And if he can't conquer that,. it's hard to see him emerge in the top two, given BK's mandate of fewer turnovers. Could he transfer or move to another position if he ends up No. 4? I think both are in play, but there's still a lot of time left for him to make a move on the depth chart, first.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:52 Eric Hansen
12:53
[Comment From Alex Columbus, OHAlex Columbus, OH: ]
I am hearing negative rumblings about new OL coach and possible defections from OSU linemen. Have you heard anything on that?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:53 Alex Columbus, OH
12:55
Eric Hansen:
I would be surprised. Having a new position coach usually brings with it some trauma and drama, even if you love the change. For the fifth-year guys, this is their fourth position coach and third offensive coordinator. I heard a lot of rumblings when Ed Warinner took over about guys being miserable, and that worked out pretty well actually. At least among the guys near the top of the depth chart, there seems to be a positive buzz.

[Comment From Don Mattessich Stamford,Don Mattessich Stamford,: ]
Hi Eric, I still do not understand BK's logic of moving Troy Niklas from a DE/OLB position to the TE position. Don't you think Troy has more upside potential as s defensive player than as an offensive one? Plus, we are stacked with TE's (Eifert, Koyack, Welch & Golic), but thin at OLB (Spond, I. Williams & Councell) Troy can make an immediate impact on our D! Your thoughts?
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:56 Don Mattessich Stamford,
12:58
Eric Hansen:
I'm going to disagree. I think Spond and Councell will handle that drop linebacker spot just fine. And keep in mind, that guys was off the field about 50 percent of the time last year. They moved Slaughter there against option teams and spread teams. I think Tory Niklas will be good wherever you lined him up, but I think he has a chance to be an All-America tight end. Given ND wants to use two, sometimes three, and that Eifert likely leaves after this season, I really like the move.
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:58 Eric Hansen

Eric, what's the word on Kendall Moore? Watching him play some last year he looked like a big hitter!
Thursday April 12, 2012 12:59 BillyO
12:59
Eric Hansen:
He is a big hitter and a real cool guy. He is being groomed to take Manti's place after Te'o graduates next year. He will have competition, though, but he'll be in the thick of things to be that guy.

It's about time Lombard is finally getting the recognition he has worked for. Nice to hear BK acknowledge that he could have played last year. What that lost experience will cost is hopefully minimized by his on the field play this year.

Hi Eric...I'm starting to hear a lot about fans (non-media) contacting prospects via social networks in hopes to "help" with recruiting. Do you think this type of contact helps or hurts and will the recruiting process ever get some regulation?
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:00 Tom From Key Largo
1:01
Eric Hansen:
I think it hurts, because you never know who is going to cross a line. I'm not sure how you could regulate it, but there's potential there for more bad things than good to happen.

Have the coaches given any indication how the Blue-Gold rosters will be divided?
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:01 Chris - NYC
1:03
Eric Hansen:
Not yet, BK will likely give us that info Monday or Wednesday of next week. My sense if it will be similar to last year, dividing the teams equally and perhaps having the offensive line play for both sides. As long as we stay away from the Stableford scoring system, I'm good.
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:03 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Brian (chicago)Brian (chicago): ]
Thanks for the chats, Eric. Any news on the backup position for RB? Do you think that the incoming frosh will have a tough time getting the systems down in the summer especially Neal? Awesome to hear the praises for Bennet and GA III. Very concerned about the Cb position though with JA and Lo wood competing for the job? Diaco will need to work his magic.
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:06 Brian (chicago)
1:09
Eric Hansen:
Brian, that was dangerously close to a 17-part question, buddy, but we'll let it slide. I think there's plenty of depth there. Riddick and GA3 are in the mix. Amir Carlisle joins them in the summer after he heals from his ankle injury. You have Mahone and Russell joining the group in the fall. As far as Neal, coming in in June is always smoother than coming in in August. I don't have a feel for how quick of a learner he is, but the offense has been simplified. I think you have a right to be skeptical about the field corner spot.
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:09 Eric Hansen
1:09
[Comment From Scott from South JerseyScott from South Jersey: ]
Eric, at this point do you see a secondary of Jackson and either Wood or Atkinson at CB with Slaughter and Motta at safeties a better option than Jackson, Slaughter at CB's with Motta and Collinsworth at safeties. I think I prefer the 2nd option with Collinsworth. It just to appears to me that Collinsworth has "it" and we should get him on the field.
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:09 Scott from South Jersey
1:11
Eric Hansen:
The only thing I don't like about Slaughter at corner is you lose him as your nickleback and as the drop linebacker against spread and option teams. I want to give the other options more time, but if there is not SIGNIFICANT progress by early August, I like your plan.
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:11 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Joe - NW SBJoe - NW SB: ]
Is the multiple TE scheme (as many as 3 TEs on the field) that Coach Kelly and Martin are experimenting with more of the Stanford or Alabama philosophy? I'm really intrigued by this because ND has always been able to recruit the best TE's in the country but have been hit and miss with the other offensive skill positions.
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:11 Joe - NW SB
1:12
Eric Hansen:
Joe, we've only seen snippets to this point, but I would point to Stanford's system as a reasonable comparison. Now if they could get a QB playing to the level of Andrew Luck ...

[Comment From Shawn from CincinnatiShawn from Cincinnati: ]
Eric, thanks for the chat. What would you say are the biggest differences between Spring practices and early fall practices other than preparing for your first opponent? Do they concentrate more on fundamentals or is it more instruction on specific schemes and plays?
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:12 Shawn from Cincinnati
1:15
Eric Hansen:
Thanks Shawn.
The tone and shape of spring practices depends a lot on who your coach is, how long he's been at the school and how old your team is. When you're a first-year coach, for example, you're trying to teach your new systems in spring. This being Kelly's third year, there's more teaching in the spring and refinement in the fall. You're more open to looking at a player at a new position than in the spring, you're tweaking schemes, opening up the depth charts. In the fall, there's much less of that.

Golson seems like the best Qb to plug inot kelly's preferred offense. What is the obstacle, if any, to prevent that from ocurring ? I see an explosive potential with him under center.

I love Golson's intelligence, athleticism, arm strength and ability to extend plays. But he's got to be accurate in his throws. That is his challenge.

Hey Eric, what can you tell us about how Kona Schwenke (sp?) is performing on the field...I remember reading earlier that he had put on some weight and was pushing nix for nose guard spot but whats your take on it?
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:17 zach from south bend
1:18
Eric Hansen:
I think Kona's improvement is real, but I do not think he can overtake Nix. He'll also have to contend with a healthy Tony Springmann in the fall. That's not to take away from the great progress he's made, but there is a lot of competition at that spot.

I think your OSU buddies are messing with you. To contact Urban, he would have to get a release from his scholarship, for starters. If he doesn't like the cold - and he doesn't -- why would he even consider OSU? I think it's pure, well, you know what.

On the QB battle, when I was growing up in high school there was differences in the way some guys performed in practice and on game day. Some players are game day playmakers, others like tommy rees are practice play makers. He may be good in practice but when it comes to games don't you think he just doesn't have it? Or is it just me? And why can't Brian Kelly see that with this QB you're set for another 8-5 season or worse? Thanks Mr Hansen you do a great job.
Thursday April 12, 2012 1:21 Leo, South Bend
1:22
Eric Hansen:
Leo, thanks. I know if it were up to a fan vote, Rees would not be the starter. I think there is a lot to like about Tommy. He absolutely is unflappable from a mental toughness standpoint. He couldn't care less if you or I believe in him. Having said that, I think we've seen the best of Tommy Rees, and I think there are better options moving forward.

Well, they are not in the same draft. Manti still has a senior season to increase or decrease his stock. I think had they both been in this draft, teams would look at them in a similar light.

There seems to be a lot of concern over the new starters at corner, but really -- outside of Blanton's performance against Mich. St. -- last year was hardly stellar. (Michigan game nightmares still regular and powerful.) What's your take at this point? Think we'll be better off or worse off than last year at that position? Thanks!

Eric Hansen:
worse off. No question. Gary Gray did struggle, but Bennett Jackson, Lo Wood and Josh Atkinson were on the roster last year and none of them came close to beating out the starters. I think Blanton played pretty well all season. The advantage these corners will have is more consistent pressure coming from the front 7 on opposing QBs.

Hey Eric, do you think that Coach Kelly should come to Gunners defense at all the more Miles keeps taking these not-so-subtle jabs at him? I'm usually all for taking the high road and not dignifying him with a response, but there's a fine line between taking the high road and letting one of the biggest coaches in the game bash the heart/makeup of kid that should be a high school senior. Gunner was very well spoken on the matter during the lone interview I have have seen, but shouldn't Coach Kelly say something to shut the hat up on this matter?

I think one of the points of having an extended OPEN competition is so that the other players clearly see for themselves who the No. 1 option is. In that sense, I think they'll absolutely rally around whoever wins the job, Rees or anyone else.

Amir Carlisle's broken ankle is healing and he's expected to be able to participate in all of the summer drills, etc. The policy of not letting players transfer to a school on an upcoming schedule was Charlie Weis' personal policy. GB, they've made the slot receiver a hybrid position, so you'll see that player line up in the backfield as well as in the slot position as a receiver. They can throw the ball to that player in either alignment.

Eric I think we can all agree Kelly bungled the QB position bigtime in 2011. How is 2012 going to be different? I mean Kelly seems to be the only person in America who thought his insane idea to rotate Henrdrix and Rees in the bowl game was a good move. A move which cost ND an easy win and at least a couple recruits in my mind

Joe, I'll let you comments stand on their own and answer your question. You have a right to be skeptical. As a recent emailer to me pointed out, there was an 8-month-long competition last year won by Crist and he lost the job in 30 minutes. I do think Kelly learns from his mistakes, although I'm not certain he considers his handling of the QBs last year a mistake. I think Chuck Martin adds in interesting dynamic to that mix that wasn't there last year. Perhaps it will make a difference in how things are handled.

It's been on the back burner this spring. They've been working more on the blocking schemes for returns and dealing with the new rules on kickoffs (do you kick it high and near the goal line or kick it deep and let them have it at the 25?) Hopefully, we'll get a bit of movement on those fronts this upcoming week.

OK, where were we? There's not a guy in the class yet that jumps out as the wandering type. Darby set the alarm bells off last year, because the guy was looking around ALMOST as soon as he committed. I do think Zaire, Elmer, Onwualu keeping the group tight can make a difference. Think back to 2007, when ND was going through a 3-9 season and Dayne Crist held that class together with really minimal defections.

I would be shocked if he doesn't. The real battle on the line, in my opinion, rests in whether Mike Golic is a better right guard than Tate Nichols is a right tackle? If Golic wins the battle, Lombard starts at RT. If NIchols wins, then Lombard is the RG.

There's been a lot of positive feedback from the players. They like an offense that's simplified. They like its versatility. They like his confidence (he's not self-deprecating on the practice field), his personality. I've said all along this move could be a real wild card.

Thanks for the chats, Eric. Any news on the backup position for RB? Do you think that the incoming frosh will have a tough time getting the systems down in the summer especially Neal? Thursday April 12, 2012 1:06 Brian (chicago)

The only thing I don't like about Slaughter at corner is you lose him as your nickleback and as the drop linebacker against spread and option teams. I want to give the other options more time, but if there is not SIGNIFICANT progress by early August, I like your plan.

Is the multiple TE scheme (as many as 3 TEs on the field) that Coach Kelly and Martin are experimenting with more of the Stanford or Alabama philosophy?

On the QB battle, when I was growing up in high school there was differences in the way some guys performed in practice and on game day. worse off. No question. Gary Gray did struggle, but Bennett Jackson, Lo Wood and Josh Atkinson were on the roster last year and none of them came close to beating out the starters.

Eric, Any idea of what the kicking situation (kicking and receiving) are looking like? We need some strong speacial team improvement.

Eric, love your chats. Is Kelly convinced he has to win this season, rather than take his lumps with AH/EG and prepare them for 2013/14? I'd rather start the best newb, get him the experience so his full potential can be unlocked down the road. I don't want to start every freshmen, but AH/EG aren't freshmen any more. Rees may be better today, but if the other started couldn't he better by game 7 next season? Thanks

Last season the team wore special mouthguards to measure impact. Any results published? Did the RKG's hit harder than CW's slackers :-)?

You made a statement the Neal would be coming to ND in June and the others this fall..... I thought all incoming freshmen showed up for summer classes?

No. what I meant was that now since the freshmen come in June, it's way easier to get them up to speed than it was when they all came in August.

I read Alex in Columbus's post as a question about whether OSU players/recruits aren't happy with Warriner and thus it is them (not ND players/recruits) who are unhappy/looking elsewhere.

Hi Eric, Appreciate the chats and your insight! It seems from the outside looking in that the practices are going more smoothly and that there is more psoitional coaching going on rather than x's and o's training which i think would be a great thing moving forward. Just wanted to see what your take on this is?

Do you think it likely or possible that Coach Kelly could show a cooler temperament during the games and that, if so, it could lead to more poise and confidence on the part of his players?

Hi Eric. Special teams have been average at best the last couple of years. Is this area getting any extra attention this spring?

Schematically yes. Nailing down personnel, not really. But they will get to the latter -- and the schemes were indeed part of the problem.

I think that would be more of a byproduct than the objective itself, which is to find out who really is the best man for the job.

will there be a freshman sensation this year that Lynch and Tuitt turned out to be wether offense or defense?

I think the guy who has the best chance to do that is Davonte Neal, but I don't think he'll have as great an impact. Lynch and Tuitt are elite players who also stepped into a position of opportunity.

Hi Eric, Saint Joseph Michigan here. Did I hear Goldman right the other day when he said that he thinks Rees is the best QB out there? If that's so should we be concerened?

He prefaced it by saying he hasn't seen any separation, but he later said Tommy was doing the best job to date, which should be expected as this juncture. He's the most experienced and his knows the offense best, Plus, he's a battler.

Ryan, I had a piece on him in March, the day after he got back. it couldn't be worked out academically that he could be in SB for spring ball, so he's working out in Utah. He rejoins the team in June for summer school.

Kelly that's difficult to project, especially among younger players.. but off the top, talking to draftniks -- Troy Niklas, Cierre Wood, Zack Martin, Chris Watt, Braxston Cave, KLM, Tuitt, Lynch, Ishaq, Slaughter are the guys who immediately jump out. That's by no means a complete list.
