Live Chat: Talk Notre Dame football with Eric Hansen(04/19/2012)
12:02
Eric Hansen:
Welcome to the pre-Blue Gold Game, post-Aaron Lynch crisis version of Notre Dame football live chat. I'm ready to field your Notre Dame football questions, provided they're not more than 1,000 words or exceed my education level. Please include your hometown/state/province/country or planet with your questions. Without further blather, we're off and running.

[Comment From BlakeBlake: ]
With all of the great lineman available in the Midwest why can't Notre Dame ever have a good power ground game like Wisconsin or Michigan Srate?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:04 Blake
12:08
Eric Hansen:
Well, Blake, Notre Dame is moving in that direction. The running game was not a priority during the Willingham and Weis Eras, but last season the Irish run game ranked 54th in the FBS in yards per game and its 4.82 yards per carry was even more impressive. Michigan State, incidentally, was 78th -- so there's progress.

ND lacked speed at LB last year. Any potential personnel or schematic changes that will help tha part of the defense this fall? Isn't KLM better at run than Lynch was and doesn't that allow more flexibilty at OLB?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:08 Gates/Boston
12:12
Eric Hansen:
I'm not sure I'd agree with your assessment ND lacked speed at linebacker last year. The only starter who leaves the group, Darius Fleming, ran a 40 in the 4.5s at Pro Day. I think being assignment-sound might have been the bigger issue. The starter lineup figures to be Te'o and Fox/Calabrese inside. Outside Shembo and Ishaq will rotate at Fleming's old spot. Councell and Spond are competing at the drop. If ND wants to get more speed on the field against spread teams, it will drop Jamoris Slaughter into the Councell/Spond position.

Eric, Do you know why the Navy game couldn't start later in Dublin? It sure doesn't seem like a great move to have your #1 commentators on at 0900 ET, 0600 PT.

It's really Navy and CBS' call and this has been in the works for some time. Maybe have a night game at that stadium isn't desirable. I'll tell you want, though, for the first time in a long time, it favors the print media when it comes to deadlines. I'll take it.

I look forward to this every week. What is the mood of the team right now with Lynch leaving, Nix looking/sounding unhappy and BK looking like he's at wit's end?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:16 Anthony from Thorold
12:18
Eric Hansen:
I think a lot of players are bummed Lynch is leaving, but they understand. Nix's situation is really different, as I wrote today. It's going to be a challenge for him the rest of the way and always has been -- but for different reasons than Aaron left. There's a lot of resolve, however, in the locker room and this team is determined at this point to put its best foot forward.

I do not see that happening. He had plenty of mentors he trusts, and he either ignored their advice or didn't seek it until after he had made the announcement, so they wouldn't talk him out of it.

Eric Hansen:
Not in my opinion. The weird thing about ND football in the post-Holtz Era and the challenge for Kelly is to make Irish football not so fragile. That's something he inherited, not created. The swings of momentum are so great from a perception standpoint. In reality, they're not as extreme but are still there. Recruiting continues to be the key to that. If you have enough talent and depth at every position, one crisis isn't going to change the trajectory of the team.

[Comment From Irv from BostonIrv from Boston: ]
Eric how big of a loss in Lynch to the 2012 season?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:24 Irv from Boston
12:28
Eric Hansen:
Aaron Lynch wasn't the most complete defensive end on the roster, but he was the most explosive. And there's no one else on the d-line that has his skill set -- and possibly his high ceiling. There are players on the roster who have the potential to be explosive, but they're playing other positions right now -- Troy Nilkas, Ishaq Williams and maybe Ben Councell. When ND kicks down to its 4-3 look there's a chance you'll see Ishaq and Shembo on the field at the same time on the edge and Tuitt and Kapron inside. That's a nice pass rush. I believe Tuitt has every bit as much talent as Lynch, but he's a different player with different strengths.

[Comment From James, DallasJames, Dallas: ]
Kelly may be doing the right thing in the spring with "teaching fundamentals" to four QB's. However, doesn't the actual evaluation boil down to Rees vs Hendrix? Largely, it's about whether Hendrix can run the offense and make a lot of big plays. Spring ball is no test of any kind for Rees. You only learn more about an experienced guy like Rees on game day. Comments?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:28 James, Dallas
12:32
Eric Hansen:
I do think the main competition is Rees vs. Hendrix, and I expect Hendrix to win that one. But I don't think Kiel is automatically 3 or 4 -- not for the balance of the season. When his head stops swimming, he has a chance to be pretty good. I think Golson has the toughest road to ascend to No. 1, based on his passing accuracy. Back to Hendrix vs. Rees, the wrinkle here is Kelly has ditched the Rees/Crist version of his offense. Last year, Hendrix and Golson practiced one version, Rees and Crist a different one. This time all four quarterbacks must master the Golson/Hendrix version. So there is something to see if Rees can extend plays and can run well enough to be a threat.

Thursday April 19, 2012 12:32 jim in dc
12:33
Eric Hansen:
My prediction when the dust settles -- and it's still flying around at the moment -- is 1. Hendrix, 2. Rees, 3. Kiel, 4 Golson when the season starts. At season's end, I believe Kiel will be No. 2.

Congrats on your award. Will Kelly be able to swallow his ego and name a starting QB other than turnover Tommy?. Also, will this be HIS DECISION or a consensus of the staff. Thanks!
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:34 Ed,Greensboro,.N.C.
12:35
Eric Hansen:
Thanks Ed. I think Kelly turning this into an open competition was a concession to swallowing his ego. If Rees is going to start, he has to show he has moved past the mega-turnover mode. That has not yet happened, in my opinion.

Hi Eric- Congratulations on the award you just won- glad to see great work acknowledged. I watched a few practices on video- it looks like the QB's are not very accurate- please tell us that you have seen greatness (or potential) at that position.
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:37 Jay W
12:40
Eric Hansen:
I had a chance to watch one entire practice (Saturday) and smaller windows of others. I think they've all had moments where accuracy is not a problem, and at other times struggled, which is to be expected in the spring time. On deep balls, I thought Hendrix and Kiel were clearly the best, then Rees, then Golson. Golson has the arm strength, but struggled to pinpoint location. The defense supposedly will bring pressure Saturday, unlike a lot of spring games, so that might be the best test -- who is accurate when they're being chased and hit -- and yes the QBs are live so they will be hit.

[Comment From Shawn from CincinnatiShawn from Cincinnati: ]
How does Brian Kelly take the Lynch loss and make it a team win? Or can he? Will the departure of Lynch change the way the Irish recruit?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:40 Shawn from Cincinnati
12:42
Eric Hansen:
The positive is that Kapron Lewis-Moore is a multi-year starter and a player a lot of teams would like to have. You just move on and keep building your team. I don't know why it would change the way he recruits. There are always going to be kids who want to transfer closer to home/girlfriend for as long as there is college football and there are girlfriends.

[Comment From Ryan from MontanaRyan from Montana: ]
Do we know the QB rotation for Saturday yet? Do you think that their play on Saturday will impact BK's choice for next fall?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:43 Ryan from Montana
12:45
Eric Hansen:
It will go by seniority -- Rees, Hendrix, Golson and Kiel and in supposedly equal proportions with the 1s and against the 1s. Kiel, incidentally, like Golson and Te'o, will wear No. 5 in the spring game. He will do so to honor his late uncle, Blair Kiel. As far as evaluations, it will be one of many pieces that form a decision, and the decision won't be until August.

[Comment From Jeff W (Dowagiac, MI)Jeff W (Dowagiac, MI): ]
During Coach Kelly's press conference yesterday, I noticed that he didn't say anything about TJ Jones when he was talking about the WR's. It seemed like he mentioned everybody else besides him. I think Jones can have a breakout year this year. What did you think about him not being mentioned, and what's your overall assessment on him?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:45 Jeff W (Dowagiac, MI)
12:48
Eric Hansen:
With Kelly, sometimes that's an oversight. His strength isn't always mentioning names or necessarily getting them correct. Holtz was like that too. But DaVaris Daniels has made a move on TJ and TJ must respond. I know early in the spring he was running with the 1s. Remember, you'll have three more guys getting looks in the fall, so this is just a snap shot, not necessarily the end result.

When I spoke to Louis yesterday, Lynch didn't even come up, so I'm not sure I understand your interpretation. I've gotten to know Louis pretty well, and I know he struggles with being away from home, with the cold, with the demands. I also know he's determined to fight through them.

Eric, losing Lynch is huge, there is no way around it. My bigger problem is that more players don't seem angered by him leaving, I'd be PO'd! My question is, do you think that there is more of this behind closed doors that we don't see or do you think they don't care that he hurt the team?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:50 Jason in Sioux City
12:52
Eric Hansen:
Jason, I don't think there's a universal feeling to this. Different guys are going to have different reactions. I think those close to Aaron separated Aaron the person from Aaron the player and in the end realized this was the best move for Aaron the person in his mind. He is still hanging out with guys on the team, studying with them, playing video games with them. etc. He really liked his teammates.

Is the quality of our recruits going down from two years ago and last year? Seems like the player rankings that came out only had ND with 2 in the top 100. Is it too early to get worried?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:53 John from Fargo, ND
12:56
Eric Hansen:
Yes it is too early to get worried. First of all, not even all the rating services can agree on players. Tom Lemming, for instance, really loves Kinlaw. Other services not as much, perhaps because Rashad missed so much time last season with an injury. A couple of other points -- ratings change. And ND typically gets some of its highest-rated guys later in the cycle. So again, they are filling needs with good players who had offers from other top programs.

[Comment From GB from Wasilla, AlaskaGB from Wasilla, Alaska: ]
From what I've read, it seems like Kelly just put Rees and Hendrix with the # 1s. he said at the beginning that it would be an "open" competition but is it really?Have Golson and Keil received fair shakes? It does seem like Rees was #1 all the time. How can a team like Cincinnati with 2-3 star players step up and be proficient QBs in a year when NDs QBs still cannot learn the system in over 2 years? Will Rees be throwing a 40 yard pass on a rope and juking out LBs? I have a hard time seeing Rees improve that much, do you?
Thursday April 19, 2012 12:57 GB from Wasilla, Alaska
1:02
Eric Hansen:
Wow GB, you almost invoked the 17-part question rule. In short, I think all of the quarterbacks have received fair shakes. The situations at Cincy and ND were not the same. Kelly inherited a No. 1 QB with no starting experience (Crist) coming off of reconstructive knee surgery. His other options were a walk-on (Nate Montana) and true freshmen (Rees, Hendrix, Massa). Now there will be some people who believe Kelly didn't help himself by giving up on Crist so fast last year. Rees' biggest improvement can come in cutting down turnovers. As to the other questions you asked about him, I don't see those changing.

I've seen some disagreement on ND message boards online as to who has a stronger arm between Hendrix and Golson. What's your take?
Thursday April 19, 2012 1:03 Paul from Honolulu

I think Hendrix does, but not by a lot. What he has that Golson doesn't at this stage is consistent accuracy with that arm strength.

[Comment From Tom, from FlintTom, from Flint: ]
Recruiting seems to be going OK this year, but not seeing many of the 5 star and top 4 star recruits looking at ND. And more concerning is their general response when they get a Notre Dame verbal offer, "I don't know much about Notre Dame other than they have a great tradition". Sure doesn't inspire us recruict-nic's when 17 & 18 year old players don't know who you are. Your thoughts??
Thursday April 19, 2012 1:04 Tom, from Flint
1:06
Eric Hansen:
I think it's just too early in the process to get overly optimistic or pessimistic. It's April, almost 10 months to signing day. There's so much that can happen (positively or negatively). The one thing I like is that a handful of the recruit (Zaire, Onwualu and Elmer in particular) are jumping into the recruiting process and luring other recruits.

I've read countless articles that talk about how Diaco prefers taller corners in his system. Somewhere in the 6'0+ range. While there may be exceptions, this is what he prefers. My question is why. Is it not as important to have smaller, faster guy in this defense? Thank you!
Thursday April 19, 2012 1:09 Tom C. - Chicago
1:10
Eric Hansen:
Tom, it's ideal to have taller, faster guys. I don't think you give up speed when a guy is 6-0, 6-1 with long arms. Now when you get to 6-3, 6-4, yes there seems to be issues with getting turned, loose hips, etc. I like that his thinking.

Guten Abend, Martin. I drank the Theo Kool-aid last year so I'm being more cautious, but his move to more of a hybrid role has seemed to feed his confidence. He has had a very good spring. TJ started strong, but he has been challenged by DaVaris Daniels down the stretch.

Given Golson's skills and success in High School, what are the odds that he's the opposite of a Crist-type in that he may practice poorly and play well in game?
Thursday April 19, 2012 1:14 Jack
1:18
Eric Hansen:
Golson certainly has the best stats in high school and the most state titles of any QB on the ND roster. His high school film was amazing, but he's playing a faster game that requires a more complete skill set. I think he is capable, but his window of opportunity is now, and it may not stay open forever.

Eric, does the loss of Lynch put more pressure on the Inside Linebackers to get to the Quarterback or will Kelly put more speed on the outside.
Thursday April 19, 2012 1:19 John
1:20
Eric Hansen:
I think it puts more pressure on the cornerbacks. If ND is going to create pressure, ti's going to come out of its 4-3 package or blitzing. And the Irish need to take the heat off the young corners somehow.
Thursday April 19, 2012 1:20 Eric Hansen

[Comment From Brandon in ChicagoBrandon in Chicago: ]
I wonder about the relative importance of location and campus culture versus coaching staff for luring (and apparently keeping) top recruits. For example, if Urban Meyer had come to ND, would he have had similar struggles? Did Nick Saban have such problems in the early years at LSU? It's hard not to look at what Hoke is doing at Antichrist U. and wonder if ND is on a rather different trajectory. Kelly's track record says he figures this out, but maybe this challenge is too great. Your thoughts?
Thursday April 19, 2012 1:20 Brandon in Chicago
1:26
Eric Hansen:
Brandon, I did a story last October called "Refracting Kelly's Vision" that kind of addressed this. It's difficult to do comprehensively in a chat, and it's a great question. The Twitter-esque version of the answer is this: There are so many extra layers a coach has to deal with at ND (Res Life, admissions, politics, etc.) that coaches in similar climates don't have to. There's also more pressure at this job than some of the other elite programs. I think Kelly has navigated the harder part of this equation pretty well. What has surprised me is how he processes and deals with the external pressures. That is still a work in progress and one that likely will come to a tipping point this upcoming season.

Eric - what was the final driver in Lynch leaving? a combo of missing the girlfriend and midwest weather?
Thursday April 19, 2012 1:26 Smitty, Tempe

Eric Hansen:
I believe the biggest factor came down to wanting to be closer to the girlfriend. His family had already moved to the Midwest. That's why South Florida makes the most sense as his landing spot -- it's closest to her.

Hello Eric: Do you believe we will ever get the story on what happened with Tee Shepard? Also, I feel a bit sorry for Aaron Lynch; he made a bad decision as relates to his education and his ability to stick to his choice of schools. For his sake, I hope he can use this episode to find some maturity. ND will be fine without him; it's a team game!

I think the Tee Shepard story will best come from him, and my hope is when he picks his next stop, he will be willing to disclose that. As far as Lynch, I think those around him told him the same thing you are saying. Maturity is an issue, yes.

Jim. it's not just the climate, it's being so far away from home you have neither the time of the means to occasionally get back there. For example, Gunner can hop in a car and be home in three hours, and he's done that multiple times this spring. For someone like Louis Nix, even when he has the time, he doesn't always have the means to get home. He can't just hop in a car. But I like your idea. Maybe for an added bonus they could get in a snowball fight with the media.

Eric - It appears that the majority of Big Skill players on offense are in the combined RB/slot position and at TE. Do you see a reduced role for the outside receivers compared to the past few years when Mike Floyd was roaming the outside? Or is BK going to force the issue until an outside WR steps up?

ICB, he's going to play to his strengths. And right now the talent/experience quotient rests in the positions you pointed out in your question.

[Comment From Ryan from MontanaRyan from Montana: ]
Ryan in Montana - I understand Gunner wearing #5 for the scrimmage - but I still do not understand why we have other players sharing numbers. Seems that Teo has earned the right to have #5 be his and his alone, yet it seems we share more numbers every year. Any insight on this practice and why it drives me so bonkers?
Thursday April 19, 2012 1:33 Ryan from Montana
1:36
Eric Hansen:
There are always going to be duplicates, but it used to only happen with the combo of high-profile player and low-profile player. Now it seems like two high-profile players share the number. Often it's an attachment to a high school number. It does enter into the recruiting equation from time to time. I'm not sure why it drives you bonkers, but I know why it drives our photographers bonkers. I've asked for Louis Nix, No. 9 and once got Robby Toma, No. 9.

With all of the time spent encouraging and essentially coddling Nix, isn't there a sense of: "Enough is Enough" already. Get me a player who wants to compete and show up every practice. At a certain point Nix's routine becomes a contant distraction - agree?
Thursday April 19, 2012 1:37 Slide_Piece
1:38
Eric Hansen:
The "coddling" doesn't happen on the field. Louis is expected to bring his "A" game every day, and when he doesn't the depth chart changes. That's why Kona Schwenke is No. 1 right now. As far as being empathetic to someone's family situation, I don't think that's coddling. His mom had a baby last year and his dad had a heart attack, and he couldn't be there for either of those things. I think it's a pretty normal emotion for a 20-year-old.

Kendall plays Manti's position, so there's a block at the top of the depth chart. He is a hard hitter, man can he whack people, but Jarrett Grace is more complete at his juncture, and the sophomore-to-be has moved ahead of Moore at MLB.

Eric -- Congratulation on your award ... it's good to see someone of Viking descent making good in a civilized occupation. I think the Lynch story simply illustrates that many kids a year or two out of high school are not mature adults, but simply kids. It can;t lower its standards and become an Alabama or even a Michigan. It is what is, we should get over it. Let's hope Kiel is a quick-study and fully grasps the playbook by August 1. Neither Rhees or Hendrix is good enough to beat the biggies. John, Bethesda, MD

I think a lot of players are bummed Lynch is leaving, but they understand. Nix's situation is really different, as I wrote today.

My prediction when the dust settles -- and it's still flying around at the moment -- is 1. Hendrix, 2. Rees, 3. Kiel, 4 Golson when the season starts. At season's end, I believe Kiel will be No. 2.

Thanks Ed. I think Kelly turning this into an open competition was a concession to swallowing his ego. If Rees is going to start, he has to show he has moved past the mega-turnover mode. That has not yet happened, in my opinion.

Eric Hansen:
With Kelly, sometimes that's an oversight. His strength isn't always mentioning names or necessarily getting them correct. Holtz was like that too. But DaVaris Daniels has made a move on TJ and TJ must respond. I know early in the spring he was running with the 1s. Remember, you'll have three more guys getting looks in the fall, so this is just a snap shot, not necessarily the end result.

Eric, losing Lynch is huge, there is no way around it. My bigger problem is that more players don't seem angered by him leaving, I'd be PO'd! My question is, do you think that there is more of this behind closed doors that we don't see or do you think they don't care that he hurt the team?

Thursday April 19, 2012 1:19 John

Eric Hansen:
I think it puts more pressure on the cornerbacks. If ND is going to create pressure, ti's going to come out of its 4-3 package or blitzing. And the Irish need to take the heat off the young corners somehow.

Thursday April 19, 2012 1:26 Smitty, Tempe

I believe the biggest factor came down to wanting to be closer to the girlfriend. His family had already moved to the Midwest. That's why South Florida makes the most sense as his landing spot -- it's closest to her.

Also, I feel a bit sorry for Aaron Lynch; he made a bad decision as relates to his education and his ability to stick to his choice of schools. Jim. it's not just the climate, it's being so far away from home you have neither the time of the means to occasionally get back there.

Ryan in Montana - I understand Gunner wearing #5 for the scrimmage - but I still do not understand why we have other players sharing numbers.

Eric Hansen:
The "coddling" doesn't happen on the field. Louis is expected to bring his "A" game every day, and when he doesn't the depth chart changes. That's why Kona Schwenke is No. 1 right now. As far as being empathetic to someone's family situation, I don't think that's coddling. His mom had a baby last year and his dad had a heart attack, and he couldn't be there for either of those things. I think it's a pretty normal emotion for a 20-year-old.

Hi Eric..Just wanna start by saying you have great stuff with a ton of insight!! I am a die hard Irish fan like yourself!! Why is Tj jones not mentioned as one of the better receivers on the team?? Is it because he meets his expectations or otherwise?

Eric Hansen:
Ryan, thanks. There are a lot of moving parts at the WR position right now -- add to the Neal, Ferguson and Brown in the summer. I wouldn't count TJ out. He played last season with a heavy heart. There is certainly opportunity in August to help himself.

Great stuff as always Eric. Will Brindza actually kick one through the uprights on a kick-off this year??

Will Defensive End be a problem? I was looking forward to the new "Recking Crew"? I think we can still be dominant.

There are some good parts there. Lynch was just different. KLM is really productive. Chase Hounshell and Sheldon Day, I think, are nice young prospects. And I believe Stephon Tuitt is the third-best player on the team.

Well deserved award Eric - one of the best writers covering the Irish, Kieth Arnold is co-No.1 up there with you - the two best on the Irish beat!!! Are you and Keith friends??

Eric Hansen:
Thanks Paul. I know Keith just a little bit. He is out on the coast, so he's not at the games and practices typically. He has the tough task of reporting long distance. From what I've seen from him and heard about him, he does a very nice job.

Oh gosh, I almost wet myself. I think we all needed that. And with that, we're going to have to call it a week. We'll do this next Thursday at noon to go over the Blue-Gold game and talk NFL Draft or maybe even oranges and light therapy. Thanks for all the great questions and kind words, and I'm sorry I didn't type fast enough to get to all the questions. I'm going to have to work with Paul Longo on that.
